THE CHAKRAS
The word “Chakra” comes from an ancient Indian language known as Sanskrit, the word Chakra literally meaning wheel, circle, or vortex, and it refers to each of the seven energy centers of which our consciousness, our energy system, is composed. Chakras are the major centers of spiritual power in the human body and are circles of energy which balance, store and distribute the energies of life all through our physical body along the subtle body. These centers were named as such because of the circular shape to the spinning energy centers which exist in our subtle etheric body, the non-material energetic counterpart to our physical body. The subtle body is the non physical body or otherwise known as our soul or spirit, which overlays our physical body. There are seven main chakras and they are located along the spine extending out the front and back of the body. Each chakra has a number of specific qualities that correspond to the refinement of energy from the base-level material-self identity, located at the first chakras, up to the higher vibration spirit-level awareness of being at our crown. These energetic centers represent our highest level of integration split, prism like, into a spectrum of colors. Our opportunity in studying them is to learn how to master each chakra’s essence and unite them all into a unified field of brilliance. As such, we re-unite our disparate parts into a radian light of full self-awareness.
The chakras are formed at the junction of three connected energy shafts that ascend the spine, one on each side of the central channel, the Shushumna. The two lesser channels of energy -- the Pingala on the right and Ida on the left -- run parallel to the spinal cord. Chakras both take up and collect prana (life force energy) and transform and pass on energy. Our material bodies could not exist without them for they serve as gateways for the flow of energy and life into our physical bodies.
Each chakra is associated with a certain part of the body and a certain organ which it provides with the energy it needs to function. Additionally, just as every organ in the human body has its equivalent on the mental and spiritual level, so too every chakra corresponds to a specific aspect of human behavior and development. Our circular spirals of energy differ in size and activity from person to person. They vibrate at different levels relative to the awareness of the individual and their ability to integrate the characteristics of each into their life. The lower chakras are associated with fundamental emotions and needs, for the energy here vibrates at a lower frequency and is therefore denser in nature. The finer energies of the upper chakras correspond to our higher mental and spiritual aspirations and faculties.
The openness and flow of energy through our chakras determines our state of health and balance. Knowledge of our more subtle energy system empowers us to maintain balance and harmony on the physical, mental and spiritual level. All meditation and yoga systems seek to balance out the energy of the chakras by purifying the lower energies and guiding them upwards. Through the use of grounding, creating “internal space,” and living consciously with an awareness of how we acquire and spend our energy we become capable of balancing our life force with our mental, physical and spiritual selves.
In order for us to become fully self-realized and in harmony with our physical and spiritual nature our denser lower energies need to be harmonized with the lighter energies of the upper centers. This is to say our survival and base tendencies have to be raised to incorporate a heart-felt spiritual focus expressed in all areas of our being. Indeed, each of the upper-level energies corresponds and refines a lower level counterpart: 7th with 1st, 6th with 2nd, 5th with 3rd. In the center of our being is full integration into the heart. Each center has an integral function in creating our energetic balance. It is through the study of our energetic and physical being that we can create health, emotional stability and spiritual bliss. These chakras, or energy centers, function as pumps or valves, regulating the flow of energy through our energy system. The functioning of the chakras reflects decisions we make concerning how we choose to respond to conditions in our life. We open and close these valves when we decide what to think, and what to feel, and through which perceptual filter we choose to experience the world around us.
Chakras are non-physical organs that transform raw life energy into more subtle, and useable, forms of energy, of a different type. The chakras do not, themselves, contain energy. Raw energy is drawn up from the planet, by the minor chakras in the legs and feet, and fed into the main chakra system.
Chakras are energy centers which move in a clockwise direction, and are located above the physical body, which is called the subtle body.
The major chakras of the human body are the seven chakras that are aligned along the spinal cord.
Secondary chakras of importance are located in the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and at major joints in the arms and legs.
First Chakra
It is through the first chakra that energy from the earth enters the suble energy system of the body, a where we would feel our connection with the earth on which we live. It gives us a connection with the life on the planet as a whole, that we are not separate little entities.
It is the seat of the Kundalini, the coiled up serpent waiting to spring. It controls the horizontal section of the body from just below the buttocks to a point just above the sexual organs; excretion and digestion of food.
We must balance this chakra before moving on to the others. Otherwise our growth will be without roots, i.e., ungrounded
Second Chakra
The second chakra is thought of "that which is itself, that which belongs to itself. It is primarily thought this chakra that we experience the deep feelings associated with physical manifestation: sexual energy, which is also the seat of creativity and the place where we experience that childlike wonder and excitement of things around us. A sense of innocence and wonder (which we sometimes lose because of blockages put on this c. by taboos toward sexuality.
Here we encounter change, for without change, we cannot grow.
Third Chakra
The third chakra, located by the solar plexus, has control over the solar plexus ganglia which plays an important part in our relationship to the world and to people, places, and things; our ability to connect and belong and make long term intimate associations; the love of one's home or one's loved as well as feelings of contentment and trust are all associated with this chakra.. (That nervous feeling at the pit of our stomach when something big is bothering you or you feel frightened-or you feel anxiety for no reason at all-often hits here or the chakra just above it, which radiates it down to the solar plexus. But they are steadier in the solar plexus, a more dulled feeling-pain, anger, fear, joy.
Transformation to a new state occurs through this chakra's basic dynamic energy and our ability to find a balance between extremes.
Fourth Chakra
The fourth chakra, the heart chakra, controls the physical body from the area of the collar bones to a point about 2 fingers above the solar plexus. There is a psychological gap b/t the 3rd and 4th chakra, a crossing point. Here a person might begin to recognize that "self" is constantly changing as it adapts to a constantly shifting spectrum of possibilities in life. The heart chakra is associated with compassion, healing. Green is considered a healing color. Opening the heart chakra, according to Lead beat, allows a person to sense energy fields and atmospheres. You can also project energy to another person through this center. (My heart goes out to you-could be almost literal.) It is through the heart center and the "3rd eye" center that a person can project rays of energy out to another person. The thymus gland, an actual physical gland located just above the heart, has an effect on the body's immune system.
The heart center is the regulator of a person's emotional life. If it is blocked in any way, then emotions will be distorted.
The task of this chakra is to integrate and balance the realms of spirit and mind with our physical body (matter).
Fifth Chakra
Fifth chakra – the throat. It is associated with the element Akasa -relating to things ethereal. It controls the portion of the physical body from midpoint of the nose to the collar bones. Once activated, we become conscious of our mental body (lower are physical, etheric and astral). By activating this chakra, the person becomes aware, for the first time, that the internal worlds are real worlds. The throat chakra also controls that the internal worlds are real worlds. In addition, the throat chakra controls a person's ability to express himself or herself creatively and effectively and controls facial expression and the non-verbal. It gives a person the confidence to say no, to disagree in a reasoned way. Fear is transmuted so that one is not afraid to express himself fully in all situations.
Here we have the realm of consciousness where communication occurs, whether that is within ourselves or to and from another.
Sixth Chakra
6th chakra – the eye of wisdom. This chakra is sometimes identified with the pituatory gland, the master gland. This is the third eye. In this center, a person harmonizes the opposing energies, and balances the yin and yang. A person experiences himself in the fullness of the "I Am," the union of the selves.
The chakra has control over seeing, not only in the physical sense but in the mystical sense. Intuitive seeing, clairvoyance and other forms of knowing and the paranormal are part of this chakra. It controls all higher mental activities. Also, through the power of a person's mind, he can create new realities for himself on the physical plane. The person activating the chakra would be concerned with things beyond earthly goals, which divert many people from fulfilling their Dharma.
The essence and function of this chakra is to "see" in the sense that we accept that complete vision will include both darkness and light.
Seventh Chakra
7th Chakra – at the crown or just above the crown. The merging of the self with the all. This chakra represents our belief systems, both conscious and unconscious.
These 7 major chakras are based along the spine corresponding to modern physiology at the location of seven nerve ganglia. Each of the chakras is associated with a certain sound, color and frequency.
When these energy wheels are balanced they help in regulating the body's mind and spirit, and help in overall well being. If the energy flow is blocked then the person's energy field can be hindered.

|
| What-to-do |
Reconnect your body to the earth by walking barefoot on grass or on a sandy beach. Walk through a park, go hiking in the wilderness, or sit with your back against a tree to get grounded. |
| Reason it works |
Presence–being here now–is essential for health. Many of us “split” from our bodies when we were very young. Disassociation made sense when it was the only way we could survive. We want to break this pattern of leaving our bodies when we are frightened or distracted because, in reality, we can only protect ourselves if we stay. |
Ways to bring in the RED energy and boost your Root chakra power are:
- Incorporate physical activities such as an exercise program or yoga.
- Eat red foods and consume red drinks.
- Use aromatherapy oils such as sandalwood, ylang-ylang or juniper (consult a specially trained aromatherapies or aura counselor to find the right oils for your specific chakra needs). Note: Every therapeutic oil or essence has its own healing power that can help with specific issues relating to each chakra.
- Stimulating music with deep beats such as drums or music that makes your body move like Latin American music. (Many metaphysical outlets have diversified selections of chakra music.)
- Wear or carry red gemstones. Red stones would be Red Tiger’s Eye, Garnet, Red Jasper or Ruby.
- Bathe in the red color in your clothing, Color Bath™, decor, art, etc.

| Reason it works |
Slowing down and becoming acquainted with who you are and what you really feel is the key to 3rd chakra health. Being in the sun supports an increase in energy, vitality, and connection to self. When we are fit and healthy, we feel able to take action. Our intentions are clearly focused. We can claim our power and stand in it, with no need to take power from someone else. |

| What-to-do |
One of the best ways to open a closed heart is through giving and receiving love with a pet – a dog, cat, horse, or even a bird can help heal earlier heartbreak and teach us how to love again. |
| Reason it works |
The heart is the central organ in the body, the life giver. A heart that is closed to minimize pain can become the catalyst for illness. Unconditional love, forgiveness, and surrender – the ability to “let go and let God” – are the hallmarks of a heart chakra in perfect balance. Pets love us unconditionally and make it safe for us to learn to love again. |
Ways to bring in the GREEN energy and boost your Heart chakra power are:
- Nature hikes. Spending time with family or friends. Surrounding yourself with plants. Gardening. Taking self-love courses. Reading romantic novels or watching romantic movies. Candlelight dinners.
- Eat green foods and consume green drinks.
- Use aromatherapy oils such as Eucalyptus, Pine, Tea Tree, Spearmint, Cedar wood.
- Music that has the sounds of nature.
- Wear or carry a green gemstone. Green stones would be Aventurine, Emerald, Jade, Malachite, and Peridot.
- Bathe in the green color in your clothing, Color Bath™, decor, art, etc.

| What-to-do |
Daily invite the divine to enter your life through prayer, meditation, or communion with nature. Or, like endurance athletes, connect with the divine through physical exertion. Honor the connection you currently have and truth will open the door to greater levels of connection. |
| Reason it works |
Fear, anxiety, and anger shut down our connection to the divine. This is one reason we pray or use techniques that allow us to release emotions that otherwise block the light coming down through the crown chakra. |
Ways to bring in the VIOLET energy and boost your Crown chakra power are:
- Focusing on dreams and writing down one's visions and inventions. Quiet contemplation, meditation and yoga. Listening to guided meditation tapes. Taking spiritual courses.
- Eat violet foods and consume violet beverages.
- Use aromatherapy oils such as Lavender, Jasmine, and Magnolia.
- Silence is the violet inspiration's music. Crystal Bowls.
- Wear or carry a violet gemstone. Violet stones would be Quartz Crystal, Diamond.
- Bathe in the violet color in your clothing, Color Bath™, decor, art, etc.
Chakras and the endocrine system
The chakras change energy from one level to another by distributing Ki (also called Chi, Prana, Mana depending on belief system) to the physical body. This is partly done through the endocrine system that regulates other systems in the body. According to tradition each chakra also corresponds to one of the major glands in the body. The Reiki hand positions not only cover the chakras but also major organs and glands.
The root chakra is in relation to the adrenal gland.
The navel chakra to the ovaries or testicles.
The solar plexus chakra is related to the pancreas.
The heart chakra belongs together with the thymus.
The throat chakra corresponds to the thyroid gland.
The third eye chakra has a connection to the pituitary gland.
The crown chakra is usually connected to the pineal gland.
The endocrine system plays a major role for the body's daily health. The glands release hormones directly into the blood stream and control all aspects of growth, development and daily activities.
Physical problems are often the result of a blockage in the energy flow in the system made up of meridians and chakras causing the organs or glands to not function properly.
How Thought Affects our Chakra Energy
You must learn that with every thought there is a reaction. This response can either energize you or decrease your life force. For example, when you have a negative thought:
- Brain: Negative thoughts cause the electricity of the brain to change.
- Meridian: Due to the change of the brain electricity, the meridian energy changes.
- Organ: The organs connected with the meridian are not properly nourished with vital energy and disease develops.
- Chakra: The astral energy feedback changes in the chakra due to the bad thought. This thought has less vitality as it is out of the cosmic tune. A block in the chakra occurs.
- Aura: Negative thinking drains away the energy of the aura. The colors become dull and the auric protection shield weaker. Negativity from the outside can pour in.
Law of Resonance: When negative thoughts are radiated to the environment, all thoughts on that morphogenetic field will be attracted. The negativity becomes stronger and happens more often.
Negative thoughts are against the Godly plan of loving. Bad life conditions will be attracted.
When one part of a chakra center is out of sync it may eventually affect its other parts and possibly it’s neighboring chakra. When a chakra center is out of balance it generally means that it is over-active or under-active, or possibly congested or blocked. If this happens it is usually felt on a mental, emotional or physical level.
What is Energy & why does it affect Our Chakras?
Sunlight is our main source and provider of light, heat and energy. Not only does sunlight sustain all life on Earth, but also it sustains the Earth itself. It provides plants with the energy for photosynthesis, which in turn sustains the lives of all animals and humans. Sunlight consists of energies in the form of the electromagnetic waves and part of this electromagnetic energy includes cosmic rays, gamma rays, x-rays, visible light rays, infrared rays, micro waves and short and long waves (radio waves). We utilize many of these energies in our daily lives; however, we seem not to put much emphasis on the visible light rays. We refer to them as the visible light rays because of all the energies mentioned above we can see visually see light rays. By holding a prism towards the sun, we can break down the visible spectrum of light rays into seven different beams of color. Light consists of the seven color energies: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. We can see these seven colors in a rainbow, drop of rain or dew and even in a snowflake.
Color and light are inseparable. Each color of the visible light rays has a different wavelength and vibration frequency, which affects us differently. Red has the longest wavelength and the slowest vibrational frequency, which we innately recognize as warm and stimulating. Whereas, violet has the shortest wavelength and the fastest frequency that we recognize as a cool and calming energy. We receive light and color information through our eyes, which then stimulates the retina and its cells, rods and cones. These impulses, which travel through the optic nerve to the visual cortex of the brain via the pituitary, trigger other glands and their hormone secretion to various parts of the body. Many body functions are stimulated or retarded by light and the different colors of light and thus affect our chakra system.
Since light and its colors physically affect glands and hormones, they will also have a marked influence on our moods and feelings. Science has proven that certain colors can calm the mind while others stimulate mental activity. We need light energy for nourishing our brain, our emotions and our physical body as well as our light bodies and especially our chakras. Light can also enter through our skin and our breath. As well, we can receive additional color energy through a balance of various colored foods, herbs, vitamins, aromatherapy, sound, minerals, clothing, decor and color bathing
Importance of Our Chakra System
In reality little is known and understood about the human psyche and its intricate systems. However, medical science has proven that toxins and other impurities, which include negative thoughts, chemical enhancements in our food and other poor environmental factors, influence our body. Constant forms of “pollution” can cause chakra imbalances to manifest, which may eventually affect us on a physical level. Since traditional health care systems at this time are unable to naturally or totally alleviate symptoms or cure our problems, this means it is up to each individual to improve their health conditions. We also have to consider that we may be our own best doctor. So understanding the chakra system is more about how you can help improve your own state of health and all levels of your being.
The benefit of learning about your own chakra system is for you to understand on a whole (whole = body, mind and spirit in harmony) that when all parts of you (all of your seven chakra centers) are communicating equally and working in alliance with each other, you will have little or no energy disorders. For example, if the mental part of you is powerful and so are the physical, emotional and spiritual parts of you equally as strong, it is then that you feel at your optimum level.
Nowadays, we live in a fast world and often forget about our “whole.” We put too much emphasis on independence and very little on interdependence. Our chakras are interdependent on each other for harmony and balance.
The emphasize of this website is to educate you on your complete chakra system so you can take control of your life and become the best you possibly can in this lifetime. No one else is totally responsible for you... accept you!
Your mind alone cannot nurture your whole being, nor can a proper food diet solve all your problems. It is important to understand that “all of you” has to be understood in order to keep “your house” in order.
If there is a disturbance on any level, this shows in a chakra’s vitality level. And each of the seven main chakras has its own innate intelligence and function. Similar to how your body functions automatically, your chakra centers also operate automatically. If you are to understand your chakra system then you must learn what each chakra’s function is and how it represents a part of your “whole.”
Treating the Chakras in Human Body
The chakras are not always balanced and in harmony with each other. At times one or more of them can become imbalanced due to external and/or emotional causes like accident, grief, emotional shock due to sudden news whether sad or happy, financial loss, fear, anxiety, betrayal, failure in love, overly reaction to a situation etc. This imbalance can disturb the energy pattern, resulting into physical, emotional and/or psychic ailments and disturbances. Not only that disease may manifest, the thought process and the very psyche may get disturbed. A constant balance between the chakras is therefore needed for good physical, mental and spiritual health and well-being. Such balance would also keep the AURA balanced.
Treating the Chakras
Each chakra is related with different emotions and body organs. There are different views about it. Practically, my viewpoint is that ordinarily one need not worry about such relationships. All that a Reiki practitioner should know is how to balance the chakras, own and those of the others. This should be done in one sitting unlike self-healing, which may be carried over to more than one sitting. This can be done as frequently as felt necessary. After receiving the attunements, it is advisable to balance own chakras on every alternate day for some days. Later, the frequency can be gradually reduced, down to once or twice a month.
The easiest way to maintain the natural balance of chakras is through application of Reiki. Give Reiki to the chakras in every healing session with the intent to bring about the balance. In fact the hand positions for Reiki treatment on head, throat, heart, abdomen and genitals are in relation to the location of the chakras. Thus, a full body Reiki healing session would automatically send the energy to them and restore the balance. While giving Reiki to the chakras, you need not bother about their speed. Let Reiki manage their natural speed. Just give Reiki to each one of them with the intention of restoring the natural balance.
Reiki and the seven chakras
Reiki (pronounced 'ray-kee') is commonly perceived to be (only) a form of spiritual healing. However Reiki is more than this: Reiki is now also increasingly regarded as a belief and behavior approach towards personal fulfillment, whose principles and philosophy can explain and achieve better life-balance and well-being; enable the furthering of self-development and discovery, as well as being a remarkable healing and recovery treatment. Based on very ancient Eastern teachings, Reiki methodology and history has given rise to confusion, speculation and mystery, although in recent years, happily, the consistency and detail of information about Reiki has progressively improved, to the point today where Reiki is an accepted form of 'alternative therapy', available and practiced widely, including its recommendation and provision by many 'mainstream' hospitals and clinics across the western world.
Reiki information and principles are particularly worthy of inclusion in this resource because of their relevance to personal development, well-being, to our understanding of mind and body, and how our minds are connected with the universe around us. Within which, the connection between mind and body, so central to Reiki principles, is significant in our understanding and developing of self, and in helping others. The Reiki concept and its underpinning philosophy therefore provide an excellent perspective for improving appreciation of the mind-body link, and the principles of life-balance and well-being.
As young children we do not question that the world we perceive through our senses is the whole thing. Later we learn that our senses are actually inadequate to know the world. In terms of total perception you actually get a lot more than you can just see, hear, taste or touch! Other natural phenomena we have come to have some understanding of include: gravity, magnetism, plate tectonics and quantum physics, not to mention huge advances in physical brain function and psychology.
Reiki is now part of a worldwide movement of people who are properly concerned about their welfare and their loved ones - and indeed the planet. People are seeking to take responsibility for their own health, working with conventional medicine but extending those boundaries. Admitting that humans are just part of a natural system might seem diminishing at first, but in fact it is empowering because understanding the rules of the game (how the system works) enables one to use it to personal advantage and to help others. It behaves us to educate ourselves; challenge the 'received wisdom' (with generosity of spirit); explore new ideas; accept the consequences of our adventures; and treat every experience as potentially something from which we can grow.
Related to this it is helpful to consider a Japanese concept known as 'tatemae' which (although on a literal level is a ceremony for putting the framework in a Japanese house) also, and more pertinently, represents the maintenance of a harmoniously balanced society. This philosophy of 'promoting good for all' is found in other cultures and beliefs too, and as a positive, giving, all-embracing approach serves both as an important driver, and context, for Reiki's values and aims.
The seven chakras are just one aspect of Reiki; there is so much more to learn and experience that is positive and good from this fascinating subject. Reiki provides a modern access and methodology, through some very ancient philosophies, to self-discovery, self-development, healing self and others, and attaining fulfillment and life balance. It is a remarkable area that is worthy of further exploration and experience.
